One of the first and most important lessons every Quran student learns is Makharij al-Huruf, the correct articulation points of the Arabic letters. Before memorization or advanced Tajweed rules, a student must first learn exactly where and how each letter is produced. Reciting the Quran with the correct Makharij preserves the meaning of the words and honors the way the Quran was revealed and recited by the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him.

What Are Makharij al-Huruf?

Makharij (plural of makhraj) means the "exit points" of sound in the mouth and throat. Each of the 28 Arabic letters has a specific point where its sound originates. Some letters share a similar area but are distinguished by subtle differences in tongue position, airflow, or vibration. Learning these points helps a student avoid mixing up letters that sound similar, such as ص and س, or ظ and ز.

The Five Main Groups of Makharij

1. Al-Jawf (The Oral Cavity)
This is the empty space of the mouth and throat, and it is the source of the three long vowel sounds (huruf al-madd): alif, waw, and ya when they extend a sound rather than represent a consonant.

2. Al-Halq (The Throat)
The throat has three points: the far throat (ء and هـ), the middle throat (ع and ح), and the near throat (غ and خ). These letters are common points of difficulty for new students learning Arabic pronunciation.

3. Al-Lisan (The Tongue)
The tongue produces the largest number of letters, using different parts of its surface against the palate, teeth, and gums. This group includes letters like ق, ك, ج, ش, ي, ل, ن, ر, ط, د, ت, ص, س, ز, ظ, ذ, ث, and ض.

4. Al-Shafatain (The Two Lips)
These letters are produced using the lips, either together or with the lips touching the front teeth: ف, و, ب, and م.

5. Al-Khaishoom (The Nasal Cavity)
This is the source of ghunnah, the nasal sound that accompanies noon and meem in certain Tajweed rules, such as idgham and ikhfa.

Why Makharij Matters

Mispronouncing a letter can sometimes change the entire meaning of a word in the Quran. This is why teachers emphasize correcting a student's Makharij from the very first lessons, before moving on to memorization. Practicing with a qualified teacher who can listen and correct in real time is the most effective way to master these articulation points.

At Rattil Wa'artaqi, our teachers dedicate early lessons to Makharij al-Huruf, ensuring every student builds a strong foundation before progressing to memorization and advanced Tajweed. Start your free trial class today and begin learning with confidence.
